The UK cottage candle scene is huge. And growing.

The UK cottage candle industry — sellers of small-batch soy candles, coconut wax candles, wax melts and reed diffusers — expanded rapidly through the 2020s and hasn’t stopped. What used to be a hobbyist Etsy category is now a full high-street presence.

Freewebstore is built for the shape of that business. Product Options for scent + size (a candle in 3 fragrances and 2 vessel sizes is 6 variants, each with its own stock and SKU). Discount codes for TikTok content drops. Loyalty points to bring repeat scent-devotees back monthly. All included, no monthly subscription.

Etsy UK stays useful for discovery — but repeat buyers get moved to your own site with a card in the parcel. Repeat costs you 2.5% (or 0.5% paid), not 10%+.

Where UK candle makers actually sell

Etsy UK: the dominant handmade candle marketplace. 6.5% + offsite ads. Great discovery, thin margin.

Not On The High Street: curated marketplace for premium candles. Higher fees, higher AOV, gets you into gift-guides.

Instagram & TikTok: where UK candle brands actually grow. Content-led discovery. Link in bio to your Freewebstore.

Amazon Handmade UK: works but strict packaging + CLP requirements, and the platform commoditises fragrance.

Local craft fairs: still meaningful for early brand-building. Sell online alongside them via your Freewebstore.

Your own Freewebstore: keeps the margin, owns the customer list, sends the confirmation email, runs the loyalty points.

Built for UK candle makers, out of the box

CLP labelling & safety warnings

Attach CLP hazard data (pictograms, signal words, H-codes) as a document per product. Displays on the product page and prints on the order confirmation. Freewebstore has structured fields for the fragrance data your oil supplier provides — no need to build custom fields.

Fragile shipping via DPD, Evri

Royal Mail Tracked 48 works for single candles up to 500g. DPD or Evri for multi-candle boxes and larger vessels — they handle fragile better. Set methods per weight band. Wax melts often ship as a first-class letter (much cheaper).

Scent + size variants

Product Options handle scent (Vanilla, Fig, Bergamot, etc.) and size (small vessel, medium, large, wax-melt bar) as nested variants. Each combination gets its own stock, price and SKU. Runs out of Vanilla Large? Only that variant shows out of stock; the rest stay live.

Wax melts is where the UK opportunity is right now

UK wax-melt sales grew faster than candle sales through 2022–2025, driven almost entirely by TikTok content and lower price points.

Typical wax-melt bar £3–£5. Typical candle £15–£30. Wax melts ship as a first-class letter for ~£1.60. Candles need proper padded shipping at £3–£4.

Most successful UK candle makers now sell both: melts as the entry-point product for TikTok discovery, candles as the higher-margin follow-up once the brand is loved.

How Freewebstore handles both

Product Categories: create separate ranges for "Candles" and "Wax Melts" so shoppers browse cleanly.

Bundling: offer a "starter" bundle (3 wax melts + 1 candle at a small discount) as its own product, driving average order value.

Repeat-buyer nudges: wax-melt drinkers reorder monthly on their own. Set up a discount code for repeat customers and email your list when a new scent lands. Not recurring subscription billing — that’s a separate build for now — but the same repeat pattern via email + discount codes.

Loyalty points: 1 point per £1 spent, 100 points = £5 off. Wax-melt buyers accumulate fast because they order regularly.

All included in Startup at £15/mo or the free Community plan.

Frequently asked questions about selling candles online in the UK

Do I need CLP labels on the candles I sell in the UK? +
Yes. Candles containing fragrance oils are regulated under the CLP Regulation (Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures) — the UK-adopted version of the EU regulation. Each candle needs a CLP label showing hazard pictograms, signal words (Warning/Danger), hazard statements (H-codes) and the ingredients that trigger them. You get this from your fragrance oil supplier — they publish CLP calculations per oil.
How do I ship candles from the UK without them breaking? +
Bubble wrap each candle, box them tightly with void fill, and ship via a courier with proper insurance. Royal Mail Tracked 48 is fine for single candles up to 500g in a padded envelope. Multiple candles or larger vessels go via DPD or Evri (they handle fragile better than Yodel). Wax melts (unlit blocks) ship much more cheaply and are usually first-class letter-rate.
Where do UK candle makers actually sell online? +
Etsy UK is dominant for handmade candles — 6.5% + offsite ads. Not On The High Street handles curated brands (higher fee, higher AOV). Instagram and TikTok are where the discovery happens. Amazon Handmade UK works but its packaging requirements are strict. Own site: keep the full margin.
Do I need to register as a business to sell candles from home? +
If you’re trading commercially (i.e. selling more than the £1,000 hobby-trading allowance), register as self-employed with HMRC. VAT registration only kicks in at £90,000. There’s no council registration required for candles specifically — unlike food. Public liability insurance is strongly recommended.
Are wax melts a bigger UK opportunity than candles? +
Increasingly, yes. UK wax melt sales grew far faster than candle sales through 2022–2025, driven by TikTok content and lower price points (typical wax melt bar £3–£5 vs candle £15–£30). Shipping is much cheaper (letter-rate) and CLP labelling is simpler. Many UK candle makers now do both.
How is VAT treated on candles in the UK? +
Standard 20% VAT applies to candles and wax melts. No zero-rating. You only charge VAT once your turnover crosses the £90,000 registration threshold. Freewebstore lets you set the rate per product.
Is Freewebstore a UK company? +
Yes. Freewebstore Ltd is registered in England (Company Number 06713528) and has traded since 2007. Support is UK-based. Customer data stays in EU/UK data centres.
