UK houseplants: the boom that stayed boomed

The UK houseplant category exploded during 2020–2022 and then, unusually, didn’t collapse back to trend. Search volume for “rare houseplant UK”, “monstera cuttings UK”, and “variegated aroids” remains elevated. Small UK growers who nurtured Instagram followings during the peak are still trading strongly.

The pattern that works: rare cuttings and unusual houseplants direct to enthusiasts through your own site. Facebook Groups for community. Instagram for discovery. Etsy UK for the sales you can’t drive yourself yet.

The UK plant VAT split

0% VAT (zero-rated): plants and seeds that produce human food — fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, herb plants, tomato plants, seed potatoes, food-crop seeds.

20% VAT (standard): ornamental houseplants, ornamental garden plants, cut flowers, decorative flower seeds, ornamental bulbs, plant pots and accessories.

A nursery selling both ranges — houseplants alongside a herb-kit gift range — can apply 0% VAT to the herbs and 20% to the pothos. Freewebstore lets you set the rate per product. Registration only kicks in above £90,000 turnover.

Frequently asked questions about selling plants online in the UK

How do I ship live plants in the UK without them dying? +
Water the plant thoroughly 2 days before shipping. Wrap the pot in a bag to contain compost. Cushion the leaves with tissue paper. Use a snug-fit box with ‘This Way Up’ and ‘Live Plants’ labels. Royal Mail Tracked 24 for small; DPD Next Day (Mon–Wed only) for larger. Never ship Thursday/Friday — the plant sits over the weekend.
What’s the VAT rate on plants in the UK? +
Depends on the plant. Ornamental plants (houseplants, cut flowers) are standard 20%. Plants that produce food you can eat (fruit trees, vegetable seedlings, herb plants) are 0%. Seeds for food-producing plants are 0%; ornamental flower seeds are 20%. Freewebstore lets you set the rate per product.
Where do UK houseplant buyers actually shop online? +
Etsy UK for rare, imported, cuttings-style plants. eBay UK for larger houseplants. Facebook Groups — especially UK Plant Swap and dedicated Aroid / Cacti groups — are where the community is. Instagram drives discovery. Own site keeps the customer email — and repeat plant buyers order relentlessly.
Can I sell cuttings and unrooted plants online in the UK? +
Yes — and it’s one of the fastest-growing UK plant categories. Cuttings ship as Royal Mail Large Letter (~£1.60) so it’s small-parcel, high-margin. State clearly that they’re unrooted and provide propagation instructions on the product page. Add a Checkout Form if buyers want to specify variegation pattern.
Do I need any licence to sell plants in the UK? +
For most standard houseplant sales, no. If you’re importing plants from outside the UK for resale you need a plant passport (via DEFRA) — but you don’t need one for onward sales of plants already legally in the UK. Certain regulated species (CITES cacti, carnivorous plants) do need permits. Standard tropical houseplants from UK wholesalers are fine.
Is Freewebstore a UK company? +
Yes. Freewebstore Ltd is registered in England (Company Number 06713528) and has traded since 2007. Support is UK-based. Customer data stays in EU/UK data centres.
